Free Tobacco Retailer Workshop

The Sutter County Tobacco Education Program is offering a free Tobacco Retailer Workshop
“Tobacco Control Laws That Affect Retail Businesses" on Thursday, June 14th, 2007, from
3:30 – 4:30 at the Sutter County Health Department Auditorium.
The workshop is for managers
and clerks who are employed by grocery and convenience stores that sell tobacco products.
Presenters include the Yuba City Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office and the
Alcohol Beverage Control Office. The workshop is at the health department on
1445 Veteran’s Memorial Circle,
Yuba City.
All clerks, store managers and owners are encouraged to attend this informative
session. The main components of both the STAKE Act and Penal Code 308 will be reviewed.
Seating is limited to 50 attendees. Call 822-7215, extension 276 by June 8th to make a reservation.

World No Tobacco Day

The Sutter County Tobacco Control program invites all smokers who
are interested in quitting to come by the Health Department for a
free quit kit.

The Sutter County Tobacco Control Program has been working with property owner,
Gene Accito within the last year to adopt smoke-free policies. We are excited to
announce that four apartments in Yuba City have implemented smoke-free policies.
Look for our add in the Appeal Democrat on May 30th and 31st congratulating Gene and
Diane Accito for taking a step toward decreasing tobacco smoke for their residents.

The Children's Summer Program Returns

The Children's Summer Program returns with a bang! The Sierra Muzzleloaders
of Brownsville will set up camp in
Howard Harter Park behind the Museum on
Wednesday, June 20. Children will learn about the challenging lives of mountain
men and the skills they needed to survive in the wilderness beyond the frontiers
of early America. Some of the skills that may be demonstrated are firemaking,
flintknapping, and the mechanics of muzzleloading guns. The mountain men will
bring the trappings of their everyday life, and set up outdoor housekeeping as
it might have been in the rugged mountains.
The program starts at 10:00 a.m., and refreshments will be served afterwards. There
is no cost to attend, and no reservation is needed. Thanks to this great group
of people that volunteer to teach children about a unique period of America's history.

Lead and Immunization Symposium

 Sutter County Lead, Immunization and CHDP Programs will be presenting a Lead and Immunization Symposium on June 8,
2007 at the Sutter County Public Health Auditorium located at
1445 Veterans Memorial Circle, Yuba City.
Dr. Steven Rosenberg, Public Health Officer for the California Department of Health Services, Lead Branch will provide a
presentation on Lead Poisoning Prevention and Sandra Jo Hammer, Nurse Consultant with the California Department of
Health Services, Immunization Branch will present on the latest Immunization requirements.
Along with these prestigious speakers the Sutter County Lead Program will be conducting a Fingerstick Capillary
Lead Training to educate medical staff on proper blood specimen collection procedures for lead testing. The Sutter
County CHDP Program will present information on the newly approved LeadCareII system and the procedures required for
CHDP Providers to become proficient along with State billing requirements.
This will be an educational and informative day which will benefit medical providers and staff as well as agencies who

New Museum Photographic Exhibit

The Sutter County Museum museum is pleased to present the stunning work of Rondal
Partridge in the exhibit From the Byways to the Highways: Rondal Partridge
Photographs California 1936 - 1969. It opens on May 18 and remains through July 8.
The six sections of California photos include early influences, California rodeo,
rural Depression shots on location with Dorothea Lange, urban pastimes and politics,
postwar expansion, and prosperity and pollution.
Partridge, a Berkeley octogenarian, looks at photography as a life of learning. There
is an accompanying catalog, Quizzical Eye: The Photography of Rondal Partridge
available in the Museum Store.

Plan Now for Extreme Heat

Sutter County officials are advising residents to plan now for the possibility
of extreme hot weather this summer. Preliminary analysis of last year’s heat wave
in California showed that most deaths were among elderly people who did not have
home air conditioning or their air conditioner was broken. When temperatures reach
100 degrees or more an electric fan is not sufficient to cool a person adequately.
During a heat wave, if your home does not have good air conditioning, visit a friend
or relative, or find another location in the community, such as a public building or
a shopping center where the air conditioning is working. Even a few hours spent in
air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
Some Precautionary Tips for County Residents:

Drink plenty of water and fluids that replace salts and minerals lost through
sweating (such as low-sugar sports drinks)
-
Stay indoors in an air-conditioned building, especially during the hottest
part of the day
-
Pace yourself and avoid heavy exertion in the heat
-
Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing. Avoid hot foods and heavy meals
-
Never leave a person or animal in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels in minutes
-
If you become lightheaded, feel confused or experience any other symptoms of
heat exhaustion, get to a cool area until you feel better

Check in on neighbors, relatives and friends, particularly the elderly who may be isolated

$50,000 in Mini-Grant Funding Announced

The Sutter County
Children and Families Commission would like to congratulate the successful
School Readiness Mini-Grant Applicants. The Commission released $50,000 in Mini-Grant funding
for this round of applications. Forty two applications from child care centers, preschools,
daycare providers and community organizations were received totaling over $75,000. At the
Commission meeting May 16, 2007 the commission awarded the allocated $50,000 of Mini-Grant
funding to 29 of those applicants. The Commission will announce future Mini Grant opportunities
on its website or you can call the Commission

Free Health and Development Screenings

Bright Futures
offers FREE Health and Developmental Screenings to
children in Sutter County under the age of 6. There are no income
or insurance requirements. This screening event is a fun way for
you to check on your child’s developmental progress and access
parenting information and local resources.
The next Saturday Screenings
are being held at Brittan Elementary School in Sutter on June 9, between 10:00 a.m.
and 2:00 p.m.
