The Adopt a Family Christmas List is a great opportunity to do something that will really give you the Christmas spirit. Your involvement in this program will make sure that a family in need from our community will have Christmas.

Each year donors from our community have provided toys, gifts, gift certificates and food baskets for Christmas dinners, boxes of non perishable food items and even Christmas trees. These donations make Christmas possible for over 100 families in our community every year.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of staph that is not killed by penicillin and similar antibiotics. It causes skin infections especially among school children. Students, faculty and staff at schools should be sensitive to the possibility of disease transmission.

The California Department of Public Health has released information to address the concerns of the educational community in California about MRSA.

In the U.S., clocks change at 2:00 a.m. local time. In spring, clocks spring forward from 1:59 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; in fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. The phrase "Spring Forward, Fall Back" is used to help people remember how to reset their clocks.

On August 8, 2005, President George W. Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Beginning in 2007, DST now begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Despite the ever-threatening presence of lead in the environment today, lead poisoning is entirely preventable. To increase awareness of childhood lead poisoning prevention, Sutter County, is participating in National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) October 21—27 along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Sutter County today launched a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The county has signed a contract to make free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage and are accepted at 15 of the County’s pharmacies. A national network of more than 59,000 participating retail pharmacies also will honor the NACo prescription discount card.

The Sutter County Health Department's Maternal, Child and Adolescent Program set up a reading corner in the clinic on September 20th and staff signed up for reading times. Children waiting in the clinic were read the book "Ferdinand the Bull". The story is about a young bull that would rather sit and enjoy the flowers than fight in a bull ring. Sixteen children were read to and each received a copy of the book (provided by the Sutter County Library Literacy Program). The number of children participating in the event will be registered in the "Read for the Record" campaign.

The 2007 State Fair Exhibit represented a “General Store” a popular place in Sutter County where one could purchase the family’s essentials from fresh fruit and vegetables to a yard of cotton calico. It was a place where the children could buy penny candy and play stickball outside while their parents sit around the potbelly stove catching up on the latest gossip. Goods were on display inside, outside and hanging from the rafters. You might find the proprietor helping folks with their purchases, postmarking letters, or recommending a home remedy-all at the “General Store.”

Facilities that have a permit to operate in Sutter County are routinely inspected for criteria that meets health and safety codes. The goal of providing inspection reports online is to allow potential patrons to review conditions that may exist at a food facility prior to visiting the establishment.

Currently food facilities are required to keep a copy of their last inspection report at the facility and make it available to customers upon request. As the community continues to grow we are seeing more health conscious individuals who are interested in knowing a little more about where they eat.

“This first positive WNV case reminds us to take extra precaution when spending time outside during dawn and dusk or peak mosquito activity,” Kinnison said. “The most important preventative step to take to protect yourself and your family from WNV is to apply an insect repellent that contains DEET when you plan to spend time outside, especially in the evening.”

While some of these photographers stayed in business at the same site for years, others were more transient, moving from town to town and sometimes from state to state. Marysville hosted a long line of photographers who established a business there and then moved on as well as several who stayed for decades. With this exhibit, we hope to open a tiny window into the past when having your picture made was truly an experience.

Sutter County's gross agricultural production value for 2006 totaled $358,845,200 with Rice, Dried Plums, Walnuts, Peaches, Nursery Products and (processing) Tomatoes as the leading agricultural commodities.

For a third year in a row, natural disasters were not conducive to agricultural crop production. Freezing temperatures in late-February affected almond and walnut production. Unprecedented rainfall throughout late-winter and early-spring affected cultivation. Then record heat from July 8 to 28 resulted in devastating affects on almost every crop, including livestock, milk and apiary production. During this heat event temperatures soared over 100°F for thirteen consecutive days.

Market prices were however encouraging for many crops, either maintaining a fair return or showing an increased return especially for Kiwifruit, Walnuts, Beans, Rice, Watermelons, Tomatoes and (Apiary) Pollination services.

As summarized in this report, agriculture continues to be a valuable asset to Sutter County's economic base. Industries, such as banking, labor, marketing, transportation, and other services directly or indirectly ties to agriculture benefited appreciably as the agricultural industry returned over $1.26 Billion to our local economy in 2006.

Now an annual favorite, the Sister Swing & Vintage Autos event is making another appearance on Sunday, July 22. Those attending will be able to view the beautifully restored vintage autos beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served on the museum patio. The energetic performance of Big Band era music by those three lovely ladies, Sister Swing, will begin at 7:00 p.m. Light desserts will be served at intermission, and the music will continue until 9:00 p.m. The auto show itself is free. Concert/food tickets for this fun-filled evening are just $20.00 and are available at the Museum or from any Museum Commissioner.

• About two-thirds of the drowning deaths in the home, not including pools, occur in bathtubs. Some of these bathtub drowning deaths happened when children were in bath seats or rings.
• 5-gallon buckets, often used for household chores, pose a serious threat to toddlers. Their tall, straight sides combined with their stability make it nearly impossible for top-heavy infants to free themselves when they topple in headfirst.
• Toilets are often overlooked as a drowning hazard in the home. The typical scenario involves a child under 3-years-old falling headfirst into the toilet.
• Spas and Hot Tubs pose another drowning hazard. A solar cover can allow babies to slip into the water while the cover appears to stay in place, hiding the child.

CPSC offers these safety tips to help prevent childhood drowning deaths in and around the home:

• NEVER leave a baby alone in a bathtub even for a second. Always keep baby in arm's reach.
• NEVER leave young children alone or with young siblings in a bathtub even if you are using a bath seat or ring. Children can drown quickly and silently.
• Keep the toilet lid down, and keep young children out of the bathroom when unsupervised. Consider placing a latch on the bathroom door out of reach of young children.
• Be sure all containers that contain liquids are emptied immediately after use. Do not leave empty containers in yards or around the house where they may accumulate water and attract young children.
• Always secure the safety cover on your spa or hot tub.
• Learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) - it can be a lifesaver.

The workshop is for managers and clerks who are employed by grocery and convenience stores that sell tobacco products. Presenters include the Yuba City Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office and the Alcohol Beverage Control Office. The workshop is at the health department on 1445 Veteran’s Memorial Circle, Yuba City.

All clerks, store managers and owners are encouraged to attend this informative session. The main components of both the STAKE Act and Penal Code 308 will be reviewed. We are excited to announce that four apartments in Yuba City have implemented smoke-free policies. The Sutter County Museum museum is pleased to present the stunning work of Rondal Partridge in the exhibit From the Byways to the Highways: Rondal Partridge Photographs California 1936 - 1969. It opens on May 18 and remains through July 8.

The six sections of California photos include early influences, California rodeo, rural Depression shots on location with Dorothea Lange, urban pastimes and politics, postwar expansion, and prosperity and pollution.

Partridge, a Berkeley octogenarian, looks at photography as a life of learning. There is an accompanying catalog, Quizzical Eye: The Photography of Rondal Partridge available in the Museum Store.

Sutter County officials are advising residents to plan now for the possibility of extreme hot weather this summer. Preliminary analysis of last year’s heat wave in California showed that most deaths were among elderly people who did not have home air conditioning or their air conditioner was broken. When temperatures reach 100 degrees or more an electric fan is not sufficient to cool a person adequately.

During a heat wave, if your home does not have good air conditioning, visit a friend or relative, or find another location in the community, such as a public building or a shopping center where the air conditioning is working. Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.

Some Precautionary Tips for County Residents:

• Drink plenty of water and fluids that replace salts and minerals lost through sweating (such as low-sugar sports drinks)
• Stay indoors in an air-conditioned building, especially during the hottest part of the day
• Pace yourself and avoid heavy exertion in the heat
• Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing. Avoid hot foods and heavy meals
• Never leave a person or animal in a parked car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels in minutes
• If you become lightheaded, feel confused or experience any other symptoms of heat exhaustion, get to a cool area until you feel better
• Check in on neighbors, relatives and friends, particularly the elderly who may be isolated

As part of National Bike to Work Month, Bike to Work Day is an effort to to get commuters to leave their cars at home for just one day and help reduce the pollution, ease traffic congestion and improve their health!

Susan’s book "Poemcrazy: Freeing Your Life with Words" was published in May 1996 by Clarkson Potter/Random House. The hardcover edition went into five printings, was selected by Quality Paperback Book Club and Writer’s Digest Book Club. The paper back edition came out in April 1997 and is now in its thirteenth printing. Poemcrazy is a Book Sense 76 Pick (Independent Bookstores) and though written for adults, is on the New York Public Library List of Outstanding Books for teens.
