Combating West Nile Virus
|
| May 31, 2005 |
According to the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California
(MVCAC), the West Nile Virus
is expected to hit California hard this year. West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne disease
that can cause debilitating illness and death to humans, birds, horses and other
wildlife. It cannot be spread from person to person. In 2004, West Nile Virus killed 27
people in California and threatened the lives of hundreds of others with neuroinvasive
diseases like West Nile-related encephalitis and meningitis.
Currently in Sutter County, there are no cases of West Nile Virus in humans, horses, dead
birds, mosquito pools or sentinel chickens. Repellents are an important tool to assist
people in protecting themselves from mosquito-borne diseases.[More] This an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. You can download a free PDF reader from Adobe. |

May is Disaster Preparedness Month
|
| May 16, 2005 |
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed May as Disaster Preparedness Month on April 21, 2005.
The proclamation, along with an initiative by the First Lady, Maria Shriver, and the
State Office of Emergency Services reminds all Californians to be aware and prepare for
disasters.
For Sutter County, we have updated our
Emergency Services’ home page to include these and other preparedness ideas. Visit our Web
page to see current weather reported
by the National Weather Services for Sutter County Communities. Checklists and information are
available to help you prepare for an emergency. Additionally, we have provided information on West
Nile Virus and the upcoming Fire Season. A site for children has been added
(FEMA for Kids) to
help them understand disaster preparedness.
