The Whole World's Watching: Peace & Social Justice Movements of the 1960s & 1970s
The social and political upheavals of this era - the period from the emergence of the Civil Rights
Movement to the end of the Vietnam War - were among the more significant events of modern American
History. With a focus on California where many of these activities were born, distinguished
photographers illuminate the rise of the Free Speech and Anti-War Movements, the Black Panthers,
feminism, disability rights, environmental activism, the struggle for gay rights and the cultural
milieu which formed and informed them.
It runs from April 8th through May 30th. A program will be announced.
Admission is free.

County Museum Hawaiian-Maidu Exhibit
This new exhibit offers a glimpse into the life of the Hawaiian-Maidu community here in Sutter
County. John Sutter brought a small group of native Hawaiians with him when he arrived in
California. They worked for him and eventually intermarried with local Maidu families. They
settled in the area of Vernon, which is now called Verona, where the Feather River flows into
the Sacramento River in South Sutter County.
This small exhibit originally appeared at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Center during the 2003
Folklife Festival and is graciously loaned by curator Hank Meals.

Ansel Adams: Inspiration and Influence - August 13 to October 3, 2004
The exhibit is divided into three sections. The first is "Inspiration" in which Adams'
images of the Sierra Nevada are compared with the work of early photographers such as
Eadward Muybridge and Gustavus Fagersteen, who were also attracted by the dramatic
beauty of this area and who exerted a decided influence on the work of Ansel Adams.
The second section called "Contemporaries" includes portraits that members of Group f.64
took of each other. The group was organized by Adams and other photographers to promote
"pure" photography in opposition to the then current trend of pictorialism. Members
included Willard Van Dyke, Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Henry Swift, Sonya
Noskowiak and John Paul Edwards. This section also includes paired photographs of
landscapes taken by Adams and others. Adams was strongly influenced by Alfred Steiglitz,
who mounted a one-man exhibition for him in 1936 at Steiglitz's gallery in New York City.
Adams and Dorothea Lange collaborated on several major magazine pictorials, further
adding to his reputation. In the early 1960's, Adams moved to Carmel, California where
he founded
Friends of Photography.
The third section of the exhibit introduces the spiritual heirs of Adams, those who reflect
his influence as a teacher, author and archivist. Photos by Robert Adams, Judy Dater,
Robert Dawson, Minor White and others are shown, many of these again in pairings with
relevant works by Adams.
The Ansel Adams: Inspiration and Influence exhibition tour was organized by the California
Exhibition Resources Alliance (CERA) in concert with the Oakland Museum of California. CERA
is supported by generous grants from The James Irvine Foundation and The William Randolph
Hearst Foundation.
