Teen pregnancy is a problem that affects the parents, the baby, other family members, and community resources.

The Facts
  • A teen girl is much more likely to become pregnant if her sexual partner is significantly older than she is.
  • Teens who become pregnant are LESS likely to:
    • finish high school
    • get vital prenatal care
  • Teens who become pregnant are MORE likely to:
    • live in poverty
    • be single parents
    • to divorce if they do marry
    • have low birth weight babies
    • have babies with birth defects
    • have babies who die before age 1
    • abuse or neglect their babies
    • have another baby within 2 years

     Birth rates for ages 15-19 years:

     2001: 46.8
     2002: 49.3
     2003: 41.0
     2004: 37.9
     2005: 43.9
     2006: 45.6
     2007: 38.3

      (live births per 1,000 females in Sutter County)

THE BEST WAY TO AVOID TEEN PREGNANCY IS TO
AVOID HAVING SEX DURING THE TEEN YEARS
